As some of you may know, a rancher’s wife wears many hats. Of course, being a supportive wife and a good mother are at the very top of my list. I also take pride in being a good cook and baker; throwing meals together to take to the field or feed a crew on short notice and without a trip to the store. On any given day, I may be the chauffeur, horse wrangler, cattle woman, farm equipment operator, parts runner, maid or Mrs. Fix It. Many projects around the yard and house fall on my shoulders while my hard working husband is in the field for long hours.
Embrace the little things.
Life offers many interruptions and distractions, at times it can feel like I’m not making any progress on my personal goals. I am always working on reminding myself to embrace the little things in life, especially during a LONG North Dakota winter. If you’ve never been to ND, the winters are approximately 9 months long (or at least it seems that way). It’s so easy to get caught up in an endless spiral of comparison. We have access to everyone’s highlight reels on social media right in the palms of our hands. In reality, most people are not vacationing nonstop or eating at fancy restaurants and meeting friends for coffee daily. I wanted to create a space on the web that is dedicated to real life. Life really isn’t all that glamorous most days, it’s filled with a lot of mundane moments (ahem… dishes and laundry and more dishes and laundry). A good, purposeful life doesn’t have to be filled with thrill after thrill – it just needs to be spent with and serving the people you love. Finding little things to enjoy and take pride in can make mundane moments add up to some of your best days.
Find something to be great at.
For me, there’s nothing better than serving fresh baked blueberry muffins on a Sunday morning to my family or seeing my husband smile when he comes in the house and there are warm cookies on the stove. The sense of pride I feel when I build something with my own hands and am challenged to figure out dimensions or design is also a highlight. I love to make the spaces I spend the most time in functional and aesthetically pleasing. Take the time to become great at something that serves those you love and you’ll find joy in the mundane things.
