Last summer when we found out we were having a baby boy, I was so excited to get started on his nursery. I immediately went to work making my vision of a classy, calm space with a western theme come to life. We choose a neutral ashy blonde, vinyl plank floor and wanted to go with some sort of green rather than baby blue.

My husband was thinking green, as in John Deere green… because what other green is there when you’re a farmer?! As you probably know, John Deere green and calm and neutral aren’t really in the same color scheme… so we compromised as husbands and wives do… and went with the color I chose – a nice, mellow sage green for the wall treatment and bright white for the remaining wall space.
We picked up a rocking recliner on clearance at our local furniture store and used an old dresser we had on hand. It’s the perfect little boy dresser. My parents purchased the crib as a baby gift for us and I think it came together perfectly!
Check out the process below:
The first step was tearing out the existing carpet and prepping the subfloor for the new flooring. This included lots of staple removal and vacuuming. Then, we laid the floor – it took about 2.5 hours one afternoon. I love laying flooring! It makes such a huge difference in a space.

I painted three of the walls white but wanted to do something of interest on one of the walls, the wall that was going to be sage green. The room is fairly small so it couldn’t be overdone but it needed a focal point. I browsed through the wood section in Menards and found some cheap, thin boards. I think they’re some sort of trim but they’re only about 1/4 inch thick. I bought quite a few pieces of this and an idea started coming to mind.
I’m one of those people that has an idea and then the idea changes multiple times after I start and becomes (usually) better than the original idea. I kept cutting random lengths of trim board and adding angles to the ends and eventually had a pattern of sorts on the wall. I just used small brad nails to hold it in place in case we ever want to take it down and do something else in this room. I filled the nail holes with putty and sanded it smooth.

Next, it was time to paint it sage green. I don’t know about you, but I think painting is a lot more fun when there is color involved. It was time consuming to paint all the little edges of the trim boards but it turned out really well. The room itself was done!

Next up, decorating! I put a few decor items on our baby shower registry and our friends and family came through with the feather mobile and cowhide rug. I found the curtains on Amazon and the Pendleton blanket was a gift from some good friends, it compliments the color scheme perfectly. The crib sheet and little tote were perfect matches as well.

I loved making this space perfect for our little guy! It’s my favorite room in the house and is so bright and airy. It has a great view of the horse pens, pasture and lake. I hope our little cowboy enjoys this space for years to come, but I’m guessing soon enough I’ll be building a bed that looks like a tractor and is painted John Deere green!
